The hibernate function on Windows XP is basically the same as stand by, but with one difference. The files and programs you have open will temporarily be saved onto a specific location on the hard drive, instead of RAM.

Do you often run out of memory on your system drive?? If yes then you can solve this problem by deleting hiberfil.sys. This file may not be visible on your computer but if your hibernate option is enabled it will be there in your system drive. To unhide this file go to Tools->Folder options->View and then uncheck the “hide protected system files”.
Now go to your system drive(System drive is the drive in which your OS is installed.) Mostly it will be C if you are running single OS on your machine. Here you can see this Hiberfil.sys. And see the size of this file. It will be almost eqaul to your RAM. Don’t try to delete this file directly. It may cause some problem in your system if you delete this file directly.
Follow the steps given to remove this file permanently from your PC and disable hibernation.
- Go to control panel.
- Click on Performance and Maintenance, then click on Power Options.
- Now go to Hibernate tab.
- Now uncheck the Enable hibernation option.
Now you can go and check your system drive. The hiberfil.sys should have been removed from there.
